SPACE TO GROW
Allotments embody hope for the future triumphing over adversity, and since 1838 Wellesbourne residents have nurtured the land and reaped harvests on their allotments. Today the site is a verdant haven where young and old step aside from the pressures of everyday life to grow fresh organic food and flowers, connect with nature, chat with neighbours, and families work together. These mental, social and physical benefits during the pandemic were highlighted in a study by the Institute for Sustainable Food at the University of Sheffield.
Uniquely though Wellesbourne allotments also involve the wider village community with special events and initiatives like OSCAR's dementia friendly plot offering sufferers and their carers a place to socialise and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of plants and wildlife.
This selection taken over three years aims to capture the uplifting and nurturing spirit of the place, lent poignancy by plans to sell the site for development.
